The Decline of Hawassa: A Call for Competent Leadership

Hawassa, often hailed as the jewel of Ethiopia, is facing an unprecedented crisis under the current administration. The municipality, once a beacon of effective governance and rapid development, is now plagued by incompetence and stagnation. At the heart of this decline is the appointment of a mayor whose experience is woefully inadequate for managing a city of Hawassa's stature.

The current mayor of Hawassa has a background limited to managing a small woreda town. This experience falls dramatically short of the demands of running one of Ethiopia's largest and most significant cities. Hawassa requires a leader with a comprehensive understanding of urban management, economic development, and international diplomacy. The current administration's failure to even implement 5% of the projects proposed by the former mayor is a stark indicator of their inadequacy. This dismal performance is not just a failure of project management but a betrayal of the citizens' trust and a setback to the city's progress.

Under the former mayor, Hawassa flourished. The previous administration was led by a dynamic and cheerful individual who not only oversaw significant local development but also represented Ethiopia on the international stage. His tenure was marked by effective project implementation, robust urban planning, and a vision that aligned with the aspirations of Hawassa’s residents. The former mayor’s educational background and leadership skills were instrumental in transforming Hawassa into a model city for Ethiopia and beyond.

The current mayor’s lack of experience is evident in the day-to-day operations of the city. From handling basic municipal services to addressing complex urban challenges, the administration appears directionless. The mayor's inability to navigate the intricacies of city management has led to deteriorating public services, stalled development projects, and a general decline in the quality of life for Hawassa's residents. This situation is untenable for a city that was once the pride of Ethiopia.

The former mayor's removal appears to be a result of political maneuvering rather than a genuine concern for the city's welfare. The leaders of the Sidama regional state, seemingly outwitted by the former mayor’s competence and popularity, have worked to oust him for reasons that remain unclear. This political infighting has had detrimental effects on the governance of Hawassa, prioritizing personal agendas over public good.

The city of Hawassa needs leadership that is not only experienced but also visionary and committed to the city's progress. The former mayor, with his qualifications and proven track record, embodies the kind of leadership Hawassa desperately needs. His knowledge and experience are crucial for navigating the city through the complexities of modern urban management and into a prosperous future.

In light of the current administration’s failures and the dire need for competent leadership, I call for the immediate reinstatement of the former mayor of Hawassa. His expertise and dedication are vital for restoring the city’s trajectory towards growth and development. The people of Hawassa deserve a leader who understands their needs, has a clear vision for the future, and possesses the skills to make that vision a reality.

Hawassa cannot afford to languish under incompetent leadership any longer. The city’s residents, its reputation, and its future are at stake. It is time for decisive action to restore competent, effective governance to one of Ethiopia’s most important cities.
