Why the Ethiopian PM Has Ignored Calls for the ገበታ ለትውልድ Project in Sidama Region
The Ethiopian Prime Minister’s decision to overlook the ገበታ ለትውልድ (“Gebeta LeTiwulid”) project proposal for Sidama Region is deeply rooted in a perception of the region’s ineffective and submissive leadership, which has struggled to showcase Sidama’s potential in economic and social development. In addition, Sidama’s declining influence in national politics has led the federal government to deprioritize investments in the region, as Sidama is seen as lacking sufficient clout or strategic importance. To attract federal resources and the Prime Minister’s attention, Sidama needs to revitalize its role in national politics, demonstrating a stronger regional identity and proving its value as an asset to the Ethiopian federation.
One of the primary reasons the Prime Minister has lost interest in Sidama’s ገበታ ለትውልድ project is the perceived incompetence of Sidama’s leadership, which has failed to communicate the region’s developmental potential. The ገበታ ለትውልድ project, which aims to foster social and economic development, would require an active and capable regional administration to make meaningful use of the resources it provides. However, Sidama’s leadership has been criticized for being unable to efficiently plan and implement projects, often following federal directives without the initiative necessary to create innovative regional solutions. Without a persuasive and dynamic leadership structure to demonstrate the potential benefits of ገበታ ለትውልድ, Sidama has struggled to make a compelling case for its inclusion in the project.
Moreover, Sidama’s limited role in national politics has weakened its bargaining power with the federal government. In Ethiopia, regions with strong representation and influence in the political arena can secure attention, resources, and investment for their local projects. Unfortunately, Sidama has not been able to assert itself as a significant player in national decision-making. This diminished influence has led the federal government to prioritize other regions with more political clout or greater perceived importance to Ethiopia’s strategic interests. Sidama’s passive approach to national politics has rendered it less visible in federal policy discussions, making it easier for the government to disregard the region’s calls for development projects like ገበታ ለትውልድ.
In contrast, regions with active political engagement and assertive regional leadership often see significant federal investment in initiatives that align with national development goals. These regions effectively use their political influence to communicate the relevance of their local projects to the federal government’s broader objectives, positioning themselves as contributors to national progress. Sidama, on the other hand, has not been able to position itself in this way. As a result, the federal government and the Prime Minister may see little justification for committing resources to a region that appears unable to leverage federal support to its full potential.
For Sidama to reverse this trend and secure federal investment, it must develop a more proactive and assertive political stance. Rather than following federal directives passively, Sidama’s leadership should work to promote the region’s unique strengths in agriculture, culture, and economic potential. By revitalizing its presence in national discussions and emphasizing its role in Ethiopia’s development, Sidama can establish itself as a valuable partner rather than a peripheral region. This shift would allow Sidama to advocate for projects that align with both regional and national development goals, making it harder for the federal government to overlook its requests.
The importance of the ገበታ ለትውልድ project should also be emphasized as a potential catalyst for economic and social growth in Sidama. If the region’s leadership were to actively highlight the transformative effects this project could bring to local communities, they might attract support from both federal authorities and private investors. For example, a well-managed ገበታ ለትውልድ initiative in Sidama could boost agricultural productivity, enhance food security, and create jobs, all of which align with national goals. By showcasing such potential, Sidama could reframe itself as a forward-looking region with a meaningful contribution to the federation, strengthening its appeal to the Prime Minister and other decision-makers.
Here is my take, the Prime Minister’s lack of interest in implementing the ገበታ ለትውልድ project in Sidama Region stems from the region’s perceived lack of political influence and ineffective leadership. To change this perception and secure federal support, Sidama must take a more active role in national politics, demonstrating its potential as a region that can contribute to Ethiopia’s development goals. This would not only increase Sidama’s visibility but also make it a region the federal government and the Prime Minister are willing to invest in. A strong, proactive, and capable leadership in Sidama is essential for the region to capture federal interest and realize its development potential.
