የኮርደር ነገር!

Hawassa, Ethiopia’s vibrant city and the capital of the Sidama regional state, embarked on an ambitious corridor development project, making it the fourth city in the country to do so. The project—hailed as a transformative infrastructure endeavor—was initially promised to be completed in three months, mirroring the rapid success of a similar project in Addis Ababa. However, four months have now passed, and the city is left grappling with unfulfilled promises, mounting frustration, and ambiguous timelines.

The prolonged delay has raised serious questions about the competence and transparency of the current leadership. The authorities, led by former members of the now-dissolved Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) and now key figures in the Prosperity Party, maintain that progress is steady and satisfactory. Yet, the discontent among residents tells a different story. The assurances that “all is well” seem dissonant when juxtaposed with the tangible realities on the ground: unfinished roads, disrupted local businesses, and increasing skepticism among the populace.

It is troubling that no clear completion date has been communicated for even the first phase of the corridor project. The lack of accountability and failure to adhere to the promised schedule have created a void of trust. City residents are growing weary of leadership that appears more adept at rhetoric than action. While progress on complex infrastructure projects can be hampered by unforeseen challenges, the persistent narrative that everything is on track—despite visible evidence to the contrary—is disingenuous.

The leadership’s credibility is further undermined by the shadow of its roots. The lingering presence of the old guard from the EPRDF days, now rebranded under the Prosperity Party, has fueled discontent. Many see this as a re-emergence of the same bureaucratic inefficiency and unfulfilled promises that marked prior administrations. These officials seem more committed to maintaining appearances than delivering tangible results for the people of Hawassa.

The residents of Hawassa and the wider Sidama region deserve better. They deserve leaders who prioritize efficiency, transparency, and the well-being of their community over political platitudes. It is high time for a shift in governance—one that places accountability at the forefront and demonstrates the capacity to fulfill promises with precision and integrity. Only through such change can the vision for a modern, thriving Hawassa be realized.

The corridor development project’s success is not merely a matter of completing an infrastructure venture; it is a litmus test for the city’s leadership and their ability to manage and implement key projects effectively. The patience of the residents is not infinite, and calls for change are becoming increasingly pronounced. For Hawassa to flourish, it requires leaders who not only make promises but deliver on them.
