…the Guarage are essentially of Sidama stock, and Sidama tribes once inhabited the area where they now live. In the seventh century, the Sidama were decimated or absorbed by groups from the northern highland later by Oromo moving west and north. Additional 14th-centure invasions by Semitic Ethiopians from the norther highlands led to the ancestors of present-day Gurage. Over centuries, the Sidama and Semitic invaders intermarried to produce the Gurage; their physical characteristics tend to resemble those of the Sidama. The Guarage speak Guaragina, a Semitic language influenced by Sidama, a Cushitic substratum language of south Ethiopic. There are numerous dialects that correspond roughly to the political and geographical divisions of Gurage tribes.(Pp.189)
