A delegation of professors from the southern states of the US, including former US Ambassador to Ethiopia, Tibor Najy, met with Foreign Minister Dr. Tedros today (October 10). The delegation, from universities which specialize in science and technology, has been on a week-long tour to Addis Ababa ,Dire Dawa, Adama and Hawassa Universities, to explore ways to forge partnerships between universities in Ethiopia and the US.
The delegation members expressed their admiration at the tremendous leap Ethiopia has made in increasing the number of universities from 2 to 32 over the past two decades. They noted the importance of supplementing this massive expansion in higher education with efforts focused on the development of the associated faculties. They noted the need to address problems in relation to a lack of instrumentation, the importance of a strategy to retain staff and the need to poay competitive salaries.
Dr. Tedros said that partnership with US universities specializing in science and technology was highly important for Ethiopia's efforts in human capital development. He said science and technology were a priority for Ethiopia's higher education and the partnership of Ethiopia's universities with US universities was vital for capacity building. The two sides exchanged views on ways to mobilize resources to support the intended partnership between universities of the two countries.
The delegation of US Universities has launched a Sustainable Ethiopian Education Development initative (SEED) to support Ethiopian universities. Through SEED, the delegation is planning to fill capacity gaps from select US universities through sandwich programs, scholarships and other forms of support.
