Ethiopia: Hawassa Develop Public Transportation System

The city administration of Hawassa has introduced Bishoftu buses to provide public transportation service for its residents. The commencement of the service marked the first public city bus transportation system in the Southern Region.
The Metal and Engineering Corporation (MetEC) has signed an agreement with the city to assemble and supply the eight buses by importing spare parts from China. The buses are being assembled by Bishoftu Automotive and Locomotive Industry (BALI), a subsidiary of MetEC.
"We have contracted MetEC to supply us with the eight buses for 12 million Br. Each bus will cost 1.5 million Br," said Samuel Abeto, head of the Hawassa City Road and Transport Authority.
The buses are designed to suit the needs of the city's residents, and have the capacity to carry 120 to 150 passengers at a time, Samuel explained.
The introduction of the eight buses is expected to ease the pressure on the city's public transport sector, especially for residents who live on the outskirts of the city, due to expansion of the city in recent years residents have had to commute to their places of employment from one end of the city to the other.
"To make the service affordable for all, the administration has introduced a reasonable transport fare as well as designed routes for the convenience of commuters. Four of the buses will provide transport services from Hawassa to Shashemene, 25km from the city; Wondogenet, 22km from the city; Dore Bafana, 18km from the city; and Morocho, 26km from the city," said Samuel.
The remaining four buses will provide services on the city's main roads, Fortune has learnt.
The Hawassa City Administration has finalised the purchase of the eight buses from MetEC by making a 30pc down payment, and committing to pay the remaining 70pc within the coming three to five years.
Anbessa City Bus Enterprise is consulting the city of Hawassa. It is estimated that the eight public buses will on average give services between to 20,000 to 22,000 residents. The services will commence from the middle of July, according to Samuel.
Currently, the city has registered 14 minibuses, 13 long-distance buses, 148 middle and short distance vehicles that have starting and ending destinations in Hawassa city. In addition, 4,500 Bajaj giving services to the public.
The public city transport will temporarily be administered by the city's road and transport office until the city sets up an independent body to administer the city buses.
