Yirgalem

I have now started my summer placement in Yirgalem; I am teaching English to the children from the Stride Athletics Club. Yirgalem is in Southern Ethiopia and it is located 260km south of Addis Ababa in the Sidamo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region. The town has a population of around 45,00 and the local language is Sidamo.
The town is around eighty years old and was previously the first provincial capital of the Sidamo Province. Despite its previous status, it has not developed at a fast rate; there are a number of derelict houses and businesses in the town and there is also a great deal of poverty. However, the town does have several schools, a hospital, a technical and vocational college, an education and training institute, a sports stadium and a couple of hotels. It also has hot springs which are used for swimming, washing clothes and the public showers. A lot of coffee is grown in Yirgalem and there are also many banana trees.
