Irrigation Project on Gidabo River ‘Well in Progress’

Addis Ababa, February 20 (WIC) – Federal Water Works Construction Enterprise said the 224 million birr irrigation development project on Gidabo River is well in progress.

The project was launched two years ago the boarders of Oromia Regional State and the Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples’ Region in Borena and Sidama zones, respectively.

“Water diversion works are fully completed,” Bisrat Demissie (Eng.), project manager, told WIC adding that other activities are also progressing well. 

“We are currently undertaking soil leveling, concrete filling and dam water filling,” Bisrat said. 

The Gidabo Irrigation Dam will have the capacity to hold 102 million metric cube of water with a length of 4.5 Km. The project, which will have the capacity to develop 11,000 hectares of land, is expected to be completed in a year and a half time. 

“The dam will enable farmers in both regions to harvest three times a year,” the project manager said.
