Beyond the Politics: - A look at a Reality of Sidama Economy

According
to the most recent World Bank’s report that analysis the World
poverty index; Ethiopia by all measures remains one of the poorest
countries of the world. The most critical challenge facing the Sidama
authorities and the Ethiopian policy makers at large -today and for
the years ahead is the urgent task of reducing absolute poverty from
the Sidama region as well as for the federal authorities addressing
the issues at a national level.
The
basic objective of economic resources management and the fundamental
goal of government anywhere, at all times must be working towards
improving the standard of living of their respective people’s over
time in the given periods of time. [...] The numerous Ethiopians
including the Sidama nation were so optimistic trusting that the
current might declare war on the greatest enemy of our people, the
abject poverty that has incarcerated the nation of the country with
varying degrees. Regardless of the aforementioned confidence
entrusted on it,[..]
Paradoxically,
the Sidama region remained working contrary to this when it
dismantled the Sidama nations’ development projects supported by
the international NGO’s whose objective was alleviating poverty.
At
present time, no body can deny the fact that our society is a
miserably poor in comparison with others within Ethiopian context
itself. I’m however, not arguing that others Ethiopian have
technologically advanced and economically developed. Besides, the
issues in Sidama are much far worst than anywhere else in the
country. This could be proven in any economic criterion and standard
that is being adopted to measure social development index using the
relevant tools.
Modern
infrastructure, manufacturing industry and service sector lag behind
the national standard. Ours is the society where a great portion of
Sidama people eke out of miserable existence in a subsistence economy
without many improvements on their daily lives. There isn’t a hope
and aspiration for the nation’s sons and daughters unless the
corrective actions and measures are taken with the right directions
to develop the Sidama instead of targeting individuals and the nation
as a whole for asking these rights. Otherwise, the future remains
gloomy for the Sidama nation.
The
Sidamaland became the land that is suffocated by man-made abject
poverty and concomitant hopelessness despite the abundance of their
immense resource that nature provided them. A wise utilization of
available resource to improve the living standard of people is not
sought.
Addressing
these problems requires courageous leadership and wisdom, foresight,
a coherent multidimensional strategy and ability or willingness to
effectively implement these strategies from the part of our regional
and federal authorities. An important element is that the one without
genuine political will and determination the development plans remain
so illusive. If there is no good will and a political commitment at
the highest level for concept of equitable distribution of resources
and dynamic production and inclusive growth; the development agendas
remain simply mantra.
The
above would require strategic thinking and planning on how best to
use the nation’s scarce resource; and an understanding of the
international economic environments. Above all, it requires a lot of
hard work and dedication from all able-bodied and working citizens
and the genuine political leadership. In other words, the task
requires a multidimensional approach and needs an effective
utilization of all the resources, particularly the human resources
available to Sidamas![...]
