Over 153,000 People Receive VCT Service in Sidama


Hawassa, 14 April 2012 (allAfrica) — More than 153, people have received HIV and AIDS Voluntary Counseling and blood Testing (VCT) in Sidama Zone over the past seven months, the zonal health department said.
Health Promotion and Disease Preventions Process owner coordinator Yohannes Latamo told ENA that more than 80,000 of them are women.
He said the department is working with government and NGOs to expand VCT service to reach out more community.
Some 520 people have found to be positive, he said.
Following the establishment of HIV and AIDS fund in government offices care and support service is being offered to 39 people living with HIV and AIDS, he said.
He said government offices have also allocated two percent of their budget each for HIV and AIDS prevention and control activities.
With this fund, 21 people living with HIV and AIDS are taking Anti-Retroviral Treatment and more than 5,000 orphaned and vulnerable children are provided shelter, food and educational material, he said.
