Ethiopian Commodity Exchange to Go Online

Image
The Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX) is making preparation to introduce online trading and establish Remote Trading centers in multiple locations across the country. The ECX is continuing on its work of easing the process of commodity transaction and facilitating an improved access to information for market players. This undertaking is expected to bring an enhanced efficiency and increased liquidity as it would allow participation in the commodity transaction process without the need to be physically present at the trading floors of the ECX. The Investment Climate Facility for Africa (ICF) is forwarding USD 2.2 towards the total cost of USD3.8, the balance of which will be covered by the Ethiopian government. During a visit of the ICF's Board of Trustees to the headquarters of the ECX, the CEO, Ato Anteneh Assefa said "with the implementation of the Online Trading System, the ECX will become more accessible to its stakeholders, especially the millions of small holder farm

Structural weaknesses stall African development

Illustration: Lu Ting/GT Long viewed as an economic basket case, Sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing its best growth performance since the immediate postindependence years. Natural resource windfalls have helped, but the good news extends beyond resource-rich countries. Countries such as Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Uganda, among others, have grown at East Asian rates since the mid-1990s. And Africa's business and political leaders are teeming with optimism about the continent's future. The question is whether this performance can be sustained. So far, growth has been driven by a combination of external resources (aid, debt relief, or commodity windfalls) and the removal of some of the worst policy distortions of the past. Domestic productivity has been given a boost by an increase in demand for domestic goods and services (mostly the latter) and more efficient use of resources. The trouble is that it is not clear from whence future productivity gains will come. The underlying pr

By Side Goodo It is often argued that the socialist regime of the military junta that took power after the 1974 revolution in Ethiopia was not exclusively an Abyssinia (Tigre and Amhara) dominated administration. The basis of such argument was the participation of handpicked few surrogates who were ready to serve their Abyssinian masters at the expense of their own peoples. In this regard, there were a number of notorious non Abyssinian cadres of the socialist government who tortured, maimed and killed their own people to obtain favours from their Abyssinian masters. Ali Musa of the then Bale province in the present Oromia region and Pertros Gebre of the then southern Shewa province are the cases in point. These individuals were some of the most brutal and the most feared non Abyssinian cadres of the socialist government of the time. Although such surrogates were encouraged to kill and maim their own people they were not tolerated when they try to voice little concern about thei
