AMB.GIRMA BIRU : 15 PROTESTERS FROM ERITREA AND ETHIOPIAN OPPOSITION ARE THE ONES WHO MASTERMINDED THE OBSTACLES TO THE EMBASSY

Washington (Agencies + DIPLOMAT.SO) – The Ethiopian government has pointed its finger at Eritrea and Ethiopian opposition groups over a disturbance that took place at the Ethiopian embassy in Washington. Ethiopia’s ambassador to the US, Girma Biru, said around 15 people had been involved in the incident, which occurred at the embassy on Monday. “They first went to the consular service office and rudely demanded to speak to the ambassador. And when the officer told them that they needed an appointment, they insulted him and went out and tried to take down the Ethiopian flag,” he said. US security forces subsequently took members of the group into custody after they refused to leave peacefully. The culprits were detained for an hour, with authorities recording their names and addresses, before they were released. According to the ambassador, no legal demonstration had been planned on the day in question and group members are known to US authorities. He further went onto say

Ethiopian group found guilty of conspiracy via social media network over Muslim face covering

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia –   A state-affiliated media group in Ethiopia says a court has found 13 people accused of establishing a secret terrorist network guilty over the issue of Muslim face coverings. The broadcaster, Fana, quoted the state prosecutor on Monday as saying the suspects used religion to conceal their terrorist intents and forge a secret network. The group opposed the legal prohibition at universities of a Muslim face covering called the niqab. Yilikal Getnet, chairman of the opposition Blue Party, said the verdicts are politically motivated and counter to religious freedom. Yilikal said no free country would charge a person with terror acts for opposing a dress code. Ethiopia has arrested dozens of journalists, opposition figures and activists for alleged terrorism offenses. Rights groups say the government is trying to silence dissent.
