Things to Do in Hawassa Hawassa is one of the more advanced and developed cities of Ethiopia located 275 km south of Addis Ababa. Hawassa is the regional capital of the Sothern Nation, Nationalities and Peoples Regional State (SNNPRS); major nearby towns to Hawassa include Ziway and Shashemene. Taxies, bicycles, horse-drawn carts (Garii) and three-legged motor taxis (Bajjaj) are the means of transportation utilized by locals. St. Gabriel Church located in the city center is a hugely popular pilgrimage destination for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians who travel to Hawassa in the months of January and July to celebrate the annual commemoration. In contrast, the growing night life is also one feature of Hawassa city that draws people from Addis Ababa and other places. Lake Hawassa, the fish market, hot springs, parks and open air markets in and around Hawassa are the other main tourist sites. Lake Hawassa Lake Hawassa is one of the major lakes in the East African Rift Valley whi

Ethiopia's Ethnic Federalism And The Right To Self-Determination The Experience Of Sidama People By Kinkino Kia The Ethiopian state that emerged as result of the 19th c. successive expansion and centralizing measures under monarchical and dictatorial Derg rules miserably failed to reflect and accommodate the existing diversity on the ground. Heading for Hawassa AUGUST 13, 2014   /  MICHAEL STRAUSS   /  COMMENTS OFF Leaving Yabello , I had been warned that the road all the way up to Hawassa was under construction , so I was up early to get a good start . I rode to the fuel station next to the motel , they were out , then across the road to join the ever growing queue for petrol , there must have been over 100 plastic containers lined up and around 20 tuk- tuks and motorcycles  in front of me , so I joined the line . The pump was only to open after 8 , being a faranji has its advantages , more so a faranji on a scooter , we made many friends who took it apon themselves to take me to the front of the queue , so as the pump came to an unconvincing life , Vic and I filled  tank and container and headed out . The road works started in town as did  our nine hour journey to cover the 300 kilometres up to Hawassa . The price of progress the inconvenience and road trauma . Those who take this route in years to come will
