“Nineteen Eighty-Four” in 2014 Ethiopiana

March 31, 2014 by  Alemayehu G. Mariam “Big Brother is Watching You!” secretly: The snooping thug state in 2014 Ethiopiana The secrecy-obsessed regime in Ethiopia has a huge creepy dragnet of secret electronic surveillance programs to sniff out the deeply-buried secrets of the people of Ethiopia. They spend sleepless nights interrogating  themselves about what the people could do to them. Who do they talk to secretly? What do they secretly say about them? Do the people secretly despise them as much as they think they do? (That’s an open secret.) Are the people secretly planning to overthrow them? Who are the secret conspirators? Where are they? In Ethiopia? Europe? America? Could the secret enemies be extraterrestrial Ethiopians from Planet X? For the regime knowledge is strength. No! Ignorance is strength. The regime must find out by hook or crook. Bug the landlines. Intercept the mobile phones. Hack the personal computers.   Filter the critical websites. What else? They

Bamboo vase uses dew to fight drought

Around the world, 768 million people don't have access to  safe water , and every day  1,400 children  under the age of five die from water-based diseases. Designer Arturo Vittori believes the solution to this catastrophe lies not in high technology, but in sculptures that look like giant-sized objects from the pages of a Pier 1 catalog. His stunning water towers stand nearly 30 feet tall and can collect over 25 gallons of potable water per day by harvesting atmospheric water vapor. Called  WarkaWater  towers, each pillar is comprised of two sections: a semi-rigid exoskeleton built by tying stalks of juncus or bamboo together and an internal plastic mesh, reminiscent of the bags oranges come in. The nylon and polypropylene fibres act as a scaffold for condensation, and as the droplets of dew form, they follow the mesh into a basin at the base of the structure. Vittori decided to devote his attention to this problem after visiting northeastern Ethiopia and seeing the plight

Bukeela ka Ethiopia: Nespresso's latest Pure Origins coffee

Image
A couple of times each year, home espresso purveyor Nespresso  unveils a new expression in its Grand Cru series of coffees. On January 21st, the company unveiled its latest addition, Bukeela ka  Ethiopia , sourced exclusively from Ethiopia, one of the birthplaces of the coffee  plant. Crafted by blending two distinct Arabica coffee beans with distinct aromatic profiles, the coffee is designed to be pressed from  Nespresso  machines as a "Lungo" or long coffee (about 3.75 oz), rather than a smaller espresso. The first bean is a washed Arabica from the small Sidama zone, in south-central part of the country. The region is known for its washed coffees and experts can identify Sidama beans from their specific floral and Jasmine aromatics. The second bean hails from western Ethiopia, where the pland grows wild. The beans are unwashed and sun dried, and lend an earthy, "wild" taste. Beans are selected from the top 1% to 2% of each area's coffee harvest, and conf

The Hong Kong native Hollywood film star, Jackie Chan, is to visit Ethiopia for two days, arriving here in Addis on Thursday, March 20, 2014, the Food & Agricultural Organization (FAO) disclosed today. Known for his acrobatic fighting style, with a bit of comic timing, Chan is invited by FAO to visit one of its programmes in Hawassa, 276Km south of Addis Abeba. Copied from Brazil, FAO has Purchase from Africans for Africa (PAA), a programme that buys cereals and vegetables from smallholder farmers to supply feeding programmes made to schools. FAO and the World Food Programme (WFP) jointly run PAA in Boricha Wereda of the Southern Regional State, targeting 2,000 farmers. WFP distributes the food bought through this programme to 8,000 students in seven primary schools. Chan, to be received by Tefera Deribew, minister of Agriculture, and Modibo Traore (PhD), sub-regional coordinator of FAO in East Africa, at Bole International Airport tomorrow, will meet some of the 1,334 stud
