Equipped with the latest European firearms, his army unleashed a devastating campaign, which according to some reports reduced the population of several ethnic groups including the Oromo by half. Wherever he faced fierce resistance, Menelik responded with the most barbaric and horrific forms of violence sometimes cutting of hands
