Ethiopia travel report by Jessica Royce My purpose for travel to YirGalem, Ethiopia, was to produce a short promotional documentary for the newly found charity; Wales for Africa health link. The Wales for Africa health link is a fairly new charity set up by the government. At the moment the charity do not ask or rely on donations, but are funded by the Welsh assembly government. For the past three years the money has been used to send out doctors and nurses from the Wrexham maelor hospital to Yirgalem hospital, Ethiopia, in order to teach staff and medical students as well as help care for some of the patients. The charity wants to start expanding and get more attention from the public, so they wanted some video evident of their trip to show the government as well as to put on the website to try and promote it. Myself, two doctors and my mother who is a nurse, took a 20.10 flight to Dubai on Friday 2 nd  March  leaving from Manchester airport flying with Emirates. We arr

The enset (Ensete ventricosum) gardens of Sidama: composition, structure and dynamics of a traditional poly-variety system

Image
Bizuayehu Tesfaye Abstract The composition and structure of 300 enset gardens from 10 different locations in Sidama were examined. Average size of the gardens was 0.74 ha. The gardens are composed of mixtures of various named enset varieties and different groups recognisable on the basis of ‘sex’ (male and female) and use (cooking and processing). The gardens exhibit high diversity, with a given garden containing up to 24 varieties (mean = 8.2). However, the components are not represented equally. Typically, the gardens consisted of one or two very abundant varieties and a much larger number of less common ones. Enset gardens are dynamic because the number and composition of varieties and different types changed from garden to garden, from location to location and across time. Their composition, structure and dynamics have been influenced by human, socio-economic factors (farm size, land per capita, cropping patterns and size of livestock), temporal circumstances and landscape

Children triggering in their community, Sidama, Ethiopia Photo by Berhanu Tunsisa, Plan Ethiopia PRESS RELEASE Countries of East Africa are making significant progress in reducing preventable child deaths, according to a new report by Save the Children that shows how Ethiopia and Tanzania have already met their targets set out under the Millennium Development Goals and Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda are not far behind. In a new evaluation of countries' progress in tackling preventable child deaths developed by Save the Children, the NGO warns that globally, four million more lives could have been saved if governments had focused equally on the poorest children as they have done on the 'low-hanging fruit': the less-poor children in less-remote areas. The report,  Lives on the Line , looks at how countries are progressing towards meeting their Millennium Development Goal of reducing preventable child deaths by two-thirds. However, in contrast with many prog

Ethiopian athletics legend Haile Gebrselassie smiles before Ethiopia's fist-ever marathon in Hawassa. Photo - AFP Hawassa:  For anyone looking for the secret to staying fit into middle age, who better to ask than Haile Gebrselassie — the Ethiopian running legend who's still giving much younger men a run for their money.  Aged 40 but barely slowing down, Gebrselassie says his enduring presence in international athletics has nothing to do with fancy foods or the latest gizmos.  The key ingredient, he said, is in the mind.  "You have to have three things: discipline, commitment and hard work," said Gebrselassie, a double Olympic gold medallist in the 10,000 metres, four-time World Champion over the same distance and two-time world record-breaker in the marathon.  It is this discipline which drives Gebrselassie to train twice a day and clock a daily average of 35 kilometres. Preparing for a race provides a goal to commit to, and he said some of his best training come
