STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) - A Staunton nonprofit is helping people on the other side of the world have something people in the United States might take for granted - clean water. On Saturday, a fundraiser hosted by Queen City Brewing will support this effort. It’s been 18 months since Greg and Charisa Knight have been able to visit Ethiopia due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they’re ready to get back to work. “You get opportunities placed beside you,” said Charisa Knight. “And you have a decision whether you pick up that opportunity or keep on walking.” She and her husband Greg picked it up. “When you go to a place and you see the need you know and know that you might be able to do something to help relieve some of that need and heartache,” stated Charisa. The 2021 Colombia Cup of Excellence green coffee auction has earned the highest average price in the history of the more than 20-year-old Cup of Excellence program. In total, the June 3 auction of 25 winning Colombian coffees, each scoring 87+ points, fetched a record-setting average of $30.79 per pound, eclipsing a global Cup of Excellence record ($28.44 per pound) set at last year’s Ethiopia COE auction. The top coffee was a washed Gesha variety from Pablo Andrés Guerrero Pérez’s farm “Obraje,” located in Buesaco, Nariño.   Young people have been   key drivers of social and political change   in Ethiopia going back to the closing decades of the   imperial era . Back in the 1960s and 1970s, university students played a crucial role in the massive protests that led to the overthrow of Emperor Haile Selassie’s regime. A   military regime   was installed in its place. Subsequently, an armed rebellion against the military regime – known as the Derg – was powered by young combatants. Most leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front – including prime minister-to-be Meles Zenawi – left university to join the  armed struggle  that overthrew the Derg in 1991. These young people grew to be the country’s governing elite as part of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front, who would themselves be  challenged  in the mid-2010s by a new crop of youths. The lake is famous for being a recreational venue with the beautiful resorts and hotels surrounding it.  Addis Standard  visited Hawassa and discussed the issue with Sidama region’s natural resource bureau and other stakeholders.   Lake Hawassa is one of the many freshwater shallow lakes found in the central Ethiopian Rift Valley with the  richest diversity  of flora and fauna compared to other Ethiopian Rift valley lakes. Among the fishes which are abundantly found in the lake are Nile tilapia catfish, a native African species and bar bus.
