Tropical Cyclone 03A made landfall in Somalia and moved inland where it is dissipating over eastern Ethiopia today, Nov. 12. NASA's Aqua, Terra and TRMM satellites passed over the cyclone an captured images of 03A before and after it made landfall. Somalia is located in the Horn of Africa and its coastline lies on the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, and Djibouti to the northwest. On Nov. 8, NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Tropical Cyclone 03A and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument captured a visible image of the storm at 10:05 UTC/5:05 a.m. EDT. The MODIS image showed a concentrated area of thunderstorms around the center of circulation. On Nov. 8 at 10:05 UTC/5:05 a.m. EDT NASA's Aqua satellite captured this visible image of Tropical Cyclone 3A in the Arabian Sea approaching Somalia. Abstract This study has aimed at examining the small holder farmers’ coping strategies to sustained household food insecurity and hunger in Southern Ethiopia (Sidama Zone). In order to collect the required input data, a comprehensive interview schedule was developed. The data were collected from 614 households who were selected through two-stage probability sampling technique. The association of each predicting variable and the dependent variable (coping strategies), controlling for all confounding factors, was examined using the multivariate analysis. The result revealed that about 54% of the households were facing mild to severe food insecurity, and of which, about 19% fall in household hunger category (as measured by Household Hunger Scale) for more than six months of the year. “Government announces temporary ban on traveling abroad for work” In an effort to curb the rising tide of abuse and exploitation of Ethiopian migrants, [there will be] a temporary freeze on citizens traveling abroad for employment. The temporary ban has been issued to prevent abuse and even killings of many Ethiopians who have travelled abroad for work. The ban is intended to remain in force until legal, administrative and institutional gaps in foreign employment have been addressed. These measures had become necessary because previous efforts by the Government to ensure the rights of Ethiopian workers abroad had failed to achieve their aim. Ensuring safe working remains one of the priority areas of the government.
