As we count down to the Year of Goat, we celebrate in advance with a new coffee from Ethiopia - Wottona Bultuma. This coffee hails from the Sidama region. Sidama is known for its clean and high quality washed coffee with unique red berry flavours. Due to the different growing conditions, coffee from the Sidama zone can be quite different from each other. This new coffee is from a cooperative called Wottona Bultuma. It is sold and marketed by the Sidama Cooperative Union. They are also responsible for the dry milling, sorting and bagging before export. The coffee cherries are bought in the local surroundings which is more than 2000 metres above sea level. The coop has several collection centers. The cherries are from small family plots of both recently planted trees and improved varietals and traditional old varieties. The variety is called Sidamo type. The coffee from this coop is limited in amounts and thanks to our partners at Nordic Approach, we managed to get hold of a small quan

Japanese bullet train commuters sip Ethiopian forest coffee

The most aromatic coffee, which emerges from the wild forests of Ethiopia, is making its way to Japan and this time around, bullet train passengers are sipping some 10 thousand cups per day, which is said to be the highest turn out so far.  Ueshima Coffee Co. (UCC), one the biggest Japanese coffee and tea manufacturers, together with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have organized a promotional event in Japan where bullet train commuters would have the chance to taste Ethiopian forest coffee originating from the southwestern part of the country: namely Belete-Gera forestry in the Oromia Regional State.  According to Fumiaki Saso, head of JICA’s agricultural division, the event is getting momentum in Japan where commuters increasingly are expressing their interest to taste the coffee’s flavor which is grown in a wild forest naturally.  Next to quality and affordability, many consumers in Japan give priority for environmentally friendliness. African coffee producers meet in Kenya to address declining production

Africa coffee producing states kicked off a three-day meeting in Nairobi on Thursday to seek ways of reversing the declining coffee production. All the continent’s coffee producers except Ethiopia and Uganda have witnessed dramatic declines in coffee production in the past two decades or so. Africa Fine Coffee Association (AFCA) chairman Abdullah Bagersh lamented that the decline in Africa’s coffee production is happening against a backdrop of an increase in world coffee consumption which is growing at an average of two percent. “It is therefore critical for African coffee producing countries to increase their productivity and quality of their coffees to ensure that farmers realize higher incomes,” he said during the official opening of the 12th African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA) Conference and Exhibition. The latest figures indicate that the global coffee production is about 147 million bags annually with Africa’s production standing at 19.1 million bags. The cont
