Proliferation of Political Organizations Does Not Address the Sidama National Question

Press Release by United Sidama Parties for Freedom and Justice (USPFJ) April 4, 2014 ...At the time when political opposition of the oppressed nations has been significantly weakened in Ethiopia due to disagreements over political objectives, the union of the three independent Sidama political institutions under one umbrella was indeed a significant success and was an envy of many. Nonetheless, to the shock and dismay of many Sidama compatriots, we have witnessed in this last two months an attempt by certain individuals to create a new political organization in the name of the Sidama people: the “Sidama National Democratic Movement”.  ...This is not the time for duplication of political organizations in the name of the Sidama society. The enset (Ensete ventricosum) gardens of Sidama: composition, structure and dynamics of a traditional poly-variety system

Bizuayehu Tesfaye SIDAMA RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT FORUM Abstract The composition and structure of 300 enset gardens from 10 different locations in Sidama were examined. Average size of the gardens was 0.74 ha. The gardens are composed of mixtures of various named enset varieties and different groups recognisable on the basis of ‘sex’ (male and female) and use (cooking and processing). The gardens exhibit high diversity, with a given garden containing up to 24 varieties (mean = 8.2). However, the components are not represented equally. Typically, the gardens consisted of one or two very abundant varieties and a much larger number of less common ones. Enset gardens are dynamic because the number and composition of varieties and different types changed from garden to garden, from location to location and across time. Ethiopia: Central bank rolls out directive for setting up of reinsurers

The National Bank of Ethiopia has issued a new directive that allows the establishment of reinsurers, reports The Reporter. The minimum capital required to attain a license for a reinsurer will be 500 million Ethiopian birr ($25.7 million). Once local reinsurers are established, domestic insurers would be banned from obtaining reinsurance from foreign reinsurers unless another directive permits it. At present, Ethiopian Insurance Corp. maintains outward reinsurance contracts with foreign reinsurers. Read more

Aster Mamo becomes Deputy PM, Civil Service Minister ፎቶ ከሪፖርተር ጋዜጣ Aster Mamo, executive committee member of the Oromo People's Democratic Organization (OPDO), one of the four member parties of the ruling party Ethiopian Peoples' Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), has been appointed by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to be the next Civil Service Minister and Good Governance and Reform Cluster Coordinator with the rank of Deputy Prime Minister. While presenting her before parliament, Hailemariam said, "It gives me great pleasure to nominate the first woman for the position of deputy PM." Aster was appointed on Tuesday and was sworn in before the House of Peoples' Representatives. This makes her the first woman to be appointed to serve with the rank of deputy PM.
