FGM leaves a scar that goes beyond physical pain. It robs young girls of the opportunity to embrace womanhood on their own terms. The shame and trauma often lingers with them for a long time. Yet in the face of these challenges, FGM survivors show strength and resilience by reclaiming their voice and advocating for a world free of harmful practices. This sacred object, traditionally held by the highest-ranking woman in the community, symbolizes the strength and power of Sidama women. With the Qarichote Siqqo in hand, these women pray for the fertility of their families, for rain during drought-stricken seasons, and for justice in cases of interfamily violence and injustices.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Qarichote Siqqo is not just a symbol of spiritual power, but also a representation of the gender equality that is deeply ingrained in Sidama culture. By entrusting the highest-ranking woman in the community with the responsibility of holding the Qarichote Siqqo, the Sidama people acknowledge and respect the leadership and wisdom of women. This tradition serves as a powerful reminder that women play a crucial role in the cultural, social, and spiritual fabric of the Sidama community.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As the rest of the world grapples with issues of gender inequality and the empowerment of women, the Sidama culture offers a valuable lesson in the importance of recognizing and honoring the strength and contributions of women. Here is the story of three brave young girls who have experienced FGM.</em></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; line-height: 31px; margin: 0px 0px 18px;">In Dara Woreda (District) of the Sidama region, Aster, Beliyu, and Tejiyu are actively advocating to end the harmful practice of FGM. Aster Fikadu had experienced the impact of FGM at an early age. Bound by tradition and cultural beliefs, her family insisted that she get circumcised. Although she barely remembers the day and procedure; she remembers the pain.<em style="box-sizing: inherit;"></em></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; line-height: 31px; margin: 0px 0px 18px;"><em style="box-sizing: inherit;">“I remember feeling pain every month and experiencing it again and again. So, she actively takes training to become an advocate for change. She now uses her experience to fight against the practice. Her family also advocates to bring change so that others can learn from their mistakes.</p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; line-height: 31px; margin: 0px;"><em style="box-sizing: inherit;">"I want to change the cultural and religious beliefs. These individuals, driven by their own selfish motives, have shamelessly used Sidama culture as a tool to further their own agendas, completely disregarding the values and traditions of the Sidama people.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">It is clear that none of the actions taken by these cadres have any real connection to Sidama culture. Instead, they have manipulated and distorted cultural practices such as affini and quexalla in an attempt to gain political power. This blatant disregard for the true essence of Sidama culture is not only disrespectful, but it also demonstrates a profound ignorance on the part of these individuals.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Promoting culture and using culture for political gain are two entirely different things that these cadres fail to understand. Culture is meant to be celebrated and cherished, not exploited for personal or political gain. The Sidama people deserve to have their culture respected and honored, not used as a pawn in someone else's political game.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Over the past five years, we have seen the Sidama culture being used solely for political purposes, with little regard for the true values and traditions of the Sidama people. This exploitation of culture for cheap political gain must come to an end. The Sidama people deserve better than to have their cultural heritage tarnished and manipulated in the name of politics.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">We demand that these incompetent cadres leave Sidama culture and cultural values out of their politics. It is time for them to realize that their actions have consequences and that the Sidama people will not stand idly by while their culture is exploited for political gain.
