ETIOPIA: PROGETTO ITALIANO E COSTRUTTORE CINESE PER LA NUOVA SUPERSTRADA PER HAWASSA

Image

Evaluation of the antiplasmodial properties of selected plants in southern Ethiopia

Abstract Background The majority of the Ethiopian population is at risk of malaria largely caused by  Plasmodium falciparum.  The resistance of the parasite to existing drugs is the main challenge in the control of the disease and thus new therapeutic drugs are required. In Ethiopia, people use different plant species to treat malaria. However, very few of them have so far been evaluated for their safety level and antimalarial activity. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and antimalarial activity of extracts of  Ajuga integrifolia ,  Clerodendrum myricoides ,  Melia azedarach ,  Peponium vogelii  and  Premna schimperi , locally used by the Sidama people of Ethiopia to treat malaria. Ethiopia should “allow journalists to do their jobs”

Image
Sam Effron Two journalists have been arrested by the government in Ethiopia as deadly demonstrations continue in the Oromia region. The Committee to Protect Journalists ( CPJ ), an independent nonprofit organization promoting press freedoms, on Sunday released a  statement calling “on authorities in Ethiopia to release the editor-in-chief of  Negere Ethiopia  online newspaper, Getachew Shiferaw, who was arrested on Friday”. Shiferaw’s arrest on Christmas day comes after the arrest of  Fikadu Mirkana , a news anchor for the state-run Oromia Radio and TV broadcaster. Mirkana was taken into custody from his home in Addis Ababa on December 19. Sue Valentine, CPJ’s Africa Program Coordinator, said, “Ethiopia prides itself on development, but economic growth is a hollow achievement if the public does not enjoy fundamental human rights such as the right to receive and share information and divergent viewpoints. “Authorities should immediately release Getachew Shiferaw, drop all charges agains

Fikadu, who works for the state-run broadcaster Oromia Radio and TV, was arrested at his Addis Ababa home on Saturday morning, according to news reports. CPJ could not determine the reason for Fikadu’s arrest. It comes as Oromia Radio and TV has, in recent weeks, covered protests against a plan to expand the Ethiopian capital, in a move that campaigners say would displace hundreds of thousands of farmers, according to news reports. Dozens of protesters have been killed during clashes with police during the unrest in the regional state of Oromia, according to a Human Rights Watch repo

Unconditionally Stop Violence against Peacefully Protesting Oromo Civilians in Ethiopia

Press Release By Sidama National Liberation Front (SNLF) Since end of November 2015, Oromo high school and university students, and the wider Oromo civilians across the Oromia region, have staged peaceful protests against the Finfinne “Master Plan” that will incorporate the city and the surrounding areas in the Oromia region inhabited by the Oromo farmers. The students, the Oromo people, and local Oromo opposition political parties condemn the “Master Plan” as a plan for a land grab that will lead to displacement of millions of the Oromo farmers plunging them into poverty and destitution. The Oromo people claim that hundreds of farmers have already been displaced by the scrupulous development plans that have no regard to the indigenous Oromo inhabitants surrounding the city. Peaceful protests by high school and university students and wider Oromo civilians in the Oromia region who are echoing legitimate grievances against the illegal evictions of the Oromo farmers are being met

Students protesting development plan met with violence in Ethiopia

Activists claim security forces have killed at least seven students in more than two weeks across Ethiopia’s Oromia state, where students have been protesting a government plan to expand the area of the capital, Addis Ababa, into Oromia. Oromia police have confirmed three fatalities in what it termed provocations by “ anti-peace elements .” Images of  severely injured students  have been posted on social media, and hundreds of other protesters have reportedly been rounded up in a crackdown on those demonstrating against several state-led development projects. Oromo students, the opposition and diaspora activists liken the proposed Addis Ababa and the Surrounding Oromia Special Zone Integrated Development Plan, or the Master Plan, to a  land grab . They fear that it will displace Oromo farmers and undermine Oromia’s interests by  expanding  Addis Ababa’s boundaries. Addis Ababa is in the state of Oromia and serves as the regional and federal capital. In theory, the Ethiopian c

Several Killed in Ethiopia Oromia Protests

Image
photo from VOA Clashes between police and protesters in Ethiopia's Oromia region have left several people dead, according to officials and regional opposition leaders. Oromia has seen three weeks of protests over a government plan to integrate parts of the region with the capital, Addis Ababa. Critics say the plan will undermine local rule and cause local farmers to lose their land. Witnesses say police have used force to contain or shut down protests, including one that took place Thursday in the town of Bako.   "Today in Bako city when the students came out to protest, people joined them and they started firing live rounds and hit some students," a witness told VOA's Horn of Africa Service. There was no word on whether anyone was killed. Bloomberg news quotes a prominent opposition leader, Bekele Nega, as saying police have killed 10 students taking part in the ongoing protests.   Ethiopia's communications minister, Getachew Reda, put the number

El Niño: Warnings increase as drought and floods hit 15 million in Ethiopia

Image
El Niño is making life very difficult for people in Ethiopia. The U.N. warned in late November that as many as 100,000 people could be displaced by flooding in the northern part of the country. Meanwhile, drought to the south will leave more than 10 million people in need of food aid, Save the Children has warned. In total, more than 15 million people in Ethiopia may need some sort of assistance in 2016. “The worst drought in Ethiopia for 50 years is happening right now … world leaders … must take the opportunity to wake up and act before it’s too late,” said John Graham, Save the Children’s Ethiopia country director, in a statement. “We know that if we take the right steps together we can prevent the suffering of millions, as well as alleviating the overwhelming and enduring poverty that these kinds of acute emergencies tend to leave in their wake.” Estimates from just a few weeks ago projected that 8 million Ethiopians would need food assistance. The jump to 10 million is leadi

Why Are Students in Ethiopia Protesting Against a Capital City Expansion Plan?

Image
Photo from Global voices Over the past two weeks, students in Ethiopia’s largest regional state, Oromia, have been protesting against a government plan to expand the area of the capital, Addis Ababa, into Oromia.  Reports  suggest security forces used  violence  including live ammunition to disperse crowds of peaceful demonstrators in the compounds of universities in Oromia. According to  Human Rights Watch , at least  three students  were killed and hundreds were injured across the region as security forces used excessive force to disperse student protesters. Other reports put the number of students killed up to  ten . Although protesters are primarily university students, in some instances, high school and primary school children were also reportedly involved in intense confrontations with government forces. At least nine students  were killed  by government forces in May 2014 while protesting over the same issue. The persecution of Oromo people The students argue that

Dispatches: Yet Again, a Bloody Crackdown on Protesters in Ethiopia

Image
Student protests are spreading throughout Ethiopia’s Oromia region, as people demonstrate against the possibility that Oromo farmers and residents living near the capital, Addis Ababa, could be evicted from their lands without appropriate – or possibly any – compensation. Social media is filled with images of bloodied protesters; there are credible reports of injuries and arrests in a number of towns; and local police have publicly acknowledged that three students have died so far.   EXPAND Ethiopian migrants, all members of the Oromo community of Ethiopia living in Malta, protest against the Ethiopian regime outside the office of Malta's Prime Minister in Valletta June 16, 2014.   © 2014 Reuters The current protests echo the bloody events of  April and May 2014 , when federal forces fired into groups of largely peaceful Oromo protesters, killing dozens. At least hundreds more students were arrested, and many remain behind bars. Both then and today, the demonstrators ar

The hosts were defeated 5-3 through a penalty shoot out by Uganda with Sudan joining them after a defeat to Rwanda by the same margin. As opposed to regular scenes of home fans filling the stadium, this match which was played  on Saturday  saw a small crowd turning in to cheer the teams. Walya Antelopes started on a high note winning a free-kick earlier on in the second minute which the captain Panom unable to beat the wall. The Sudanese should have taken the lead in the 13th minute when keeper Yidnekachew Kidane parried the ball to the opponent with Atif Eltayib unable to finish off the rebound.
