Avocados are one of the most rich, delicious, and satisfying foods on the planet. But as a nutritionist, I’m also happy to report that an avocado is a powerhouse superfood. These luscious gems which are technically fruits, although I categorize them as “good” fat are packed with anti-aging, disease fighting antioxidants, and nearly 20 different vitamins and minerals.

One study out this year found that regular avocado eaters have higher intakes of fiber, vitamins E and K, magnesium and potassium—pretty darn impressive! I eat avocado in at least one meal each day, and I love how versatile they are for cooking (more on that below), but there’s also more health-related news to share.
Check out these five amazing avocado benefits. They boost satietyEating good fats helps to slow stomach emptying, which keeps you fuller longer and delays the return of hunger. Avocados, which provide about 22 grams of fat each (mostly as heart healthy monounsaturated fatty acids, or MUFAs), certainly fit the bill. In one recent study, volunteers rated feelings of satisfaction and appetite after dining on meals with or without avocado. The addition of half of an avocado to meals resulted in a significant boost in self-reported satiety and a reduced desire to eat for up to five hours. This is one of the reasons I often reach for guacamole as my salad dressing. They’re waist whittlers According to a recent survey, Americans are still fat-phobic, probably due to the notion that eating fat makes you fat. But the truth is eating the right types of fat is actually a savvy weight-loss strategy. In addition to upping satiety, plant-based fats like avocado provide antioxidants and fight inflammation, which have both been linked to weight management. That may be why recent research revealed that regular avocado eaters weigh less and have smaller waists, even without eating fewer calories
They protect your tickerThe MUFAs in avocados have been shown to slash “bad” LDL cholesterol, and up “good” HDL levels a double whammy effect that helps to lower the risk of heart disease, the #1 killer of both men and women. A recent UCLA study also uncovered some remarkable heart protective effects of avocado consumption: Compared to eating a burger without avocado, the addition of half of a Hass curbed the production of compounds that contribute to inflammation, improved blood flow, and didn’t increase triglycerides (blood fats) beyond the amounts raised by the burger alone. Avocados are also a source of potassium, a nutrient that helps reduce blood pressure by acting as a natural diuretic to sweep excess sodium and fluid out of the body, which relieves pressure on the heart and arteries (bonus: that also means avocado is a natural de-bloater!).
They’re nutrient booster. Enjoying avocado at mealtime can help your body absorb more antioxidants from other healthy foods. In one Ohio State study, when men and women ate salads and salsa topped with 2.5 tablespoons of avocado, they absorbed over 8 times more alpha-carotene and 13 times more beta-carotene phytonutrients known to fight cancer and heart disease. Another recent study found that pairing avocado with tomato sauce and carrots boosts absorption of the veggies’ vitamin A, a key nutrient needed for healthy skin, vision, and immunity.
They’re not just for savory dishes. I adore guacamole, but one of my favorite things about avocado is that there are so many other ways to enjoy it, including in sweet dishes. I often whip avocado into fruit smoothies, whip it into chocolaty pudding, and substitute it for butter when baking. Just trade each tablespoon of butter in recipes like brownies and cupcakes for half a tablespoon of avocado. This swap slashes calories, upgrades the nutritional quality of your goodies, and still provides the creamy texture that will leave you feeling satisfied. Try it, and send us a picture of your healthy creation!Avocados are one of the most rich, delicious, and satisfying foods on the planet. But as a nutritionist, I’m also happy to report that an avocado is a powerhouse superfood. These luscious gems which are technically fruits, although I categorize them as “good” fat are packed with anti-aging, disease fighting antioxidants, and nearly 20 different vitamins and minerals.

This testimony was written by blogger and human rights advocate Befeqadu Hailu in late August 2014. A founding member of the Zone9 blogging collective and a Global Voices community member, he was arrested and imprisoned on April 25, 2014 along with five fellow members of Zone9 and three journalist colleagues. On July 17, 2014, all nine detainees were charged under the country’s penal code and the Terrorism Proclamation of 2009. Befeqadu mentions in his text the names of several of his fellow detainees including Abel, Mahlet, and Natnael. All are members of the Zone9 collective.
This is the first of two installments of an abridged version of Befeqadu’s testimony. It was translated from Amharic to English by Endalk Chala and edited for clarity and context by Ellery Roberts Biddle. The full, unabridged testimony is available in PDF form here.
“So, what do you think is your crime?”
My interrogator posed this question after forcing me to recount my work as an activist and progressive blogger. Soon after the interrogation, when my captors reunited me with my blogger friends, we realized that we were all asked this same question:
Befekadu-300x300
Befeqadu Hailu. Photo used with permission.
“So what do you think is your crime?”
The question is intriguing. It sheds light on our innocence, on our refusal to acknowledge whatever crimes our captors suspect us of committing. Yes, they probed us severely, but each session ended with same question. The investigation was not meant to prove or disprove our offenses. It was meant simply to make us plead guilty.
After two years of writing and working to engage citizens in political debate, we have been apprehended and investigated. Blame is being laid upon us for committing criminal acts, for supposedly being members and “accepting the missions” of [opposition political parties] Ginbot7/May 15 and OLF. [1]
The next step is “due process” and our prosecution, but I believe there are still questions to be answered. How did we get here? What was our interrogation like? Are we really members of Ginbot7/May15?  If not, why have they arrested us?  Will they release us soon?
No matter what, boundaries exist in this country. People who write about Ethiopia’s political reality will face the threat of incarceration as long as they live here.
We believe that everyone who experiences this reality, dreading the consequences of expressing their views, lives in the outer ring of the prison – the nation itself. That is why we call our blog Zone9. [2]
Zone9 was merely two weeks old when the government made our collective blog inaccessible in Ethiopia in 2012. Despite the blockage, we continued to write, but we knew that the fate of our blocked blogs could be our own. We knew we could end up being arrested.
In the days and weeks leading up to our incarceration in April 2014, government security agents threatened us with imminent arrest, but we were still shaken by what happened to us. The six local members of the blogging collective and our three journalist allies were arrested and detained. With the exception of one of the journalists (Asmamaw Hailegiorgis of Addis Guday newspaper) we were arrested on Friday April 25 at about 11:00 pm and taken from our respective locations. Asmamaw was arrested the next morning. By the time we were seized and taken to the detention center, the search “warrant” that authorized our arrest was well over its time limit, according to Ethiopian law. The unlawful intrusion on our rights began here. Without delay, we became the victims of many violations of Ethiopian law by the authorities.

The tripartite technical commission will select a consultancy firm to conduct studies into the impact of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam as required by the international technical panel in May 2013
________________________________________________________________________

The upcoming round of talks between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is the most important yet, Irrigation Minister Hossam Moghazi has said.
Moghazi told state news agency MENA that the tripartite technical commission will select one from nine consultancy firms – three from each country – to conduct studies into the impact of the dam as required by the international technical panel in May 2013.
A panel of specialists, including several international experts, concluded in May 2013 that studies to assess the dam’s impact on the flow of the Nile were insufficient and that further investigations were needed.
The second stage of talks between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia about the dam will be held next Thursday and Friday in Cairo.
According to Moghazi, if the meetings in Cairo end without selecting a consultancy firm, the tripartite technical commission composed of 12 experts will have another two weeks to sort out that the matter.
Moghazi also said the committee would choose an international law firm to represent Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia in negotiations with the consultancy firm regarding financial and administrative matters, hinting the financial costs will be divided equally between the three countries.
The minister added that the chosen consultancy firm should finish its studies within five months, before March 2015.
Egypt has concerns that the $4.2 billion dam currently under construction will affect negatively its water supply.
Ethiopia and other Nile Basin countries signed a 2010 pact to work on river projects without Cairo's prior consent, claiming that Egypt's claims to the bulk of the Nile water are invalid.
President Dr. Mulatu Teshome decorated six high ranking military officers in recognition of their outstanding performance on their positions.
Three of the officers have been promoted from Brigadier General to Major General while the remaining three have been promoted from Major General to Lieutenant General.
Accordingly Brigadier Generals Zewdu Eshete, Teklebirhan Wolde Aregay and Kinfe Dagnew have all been decorated with the title of Major General while Major Generals Abrham Woldemariam, Adem Mohammed and Birhanu Jula have all claimed the rank of Lieutenant General.
Speaking at the event, President Dr. Mulatu Teshome said members of the defense forces of the country are discharging their duties in supporting the country's development journey.
The President also appreciated the army's contribution in peace building process of the country as well as that of the East African region and the continent at large.
Ethiopian Prime Minister and Commander In Chief of the Army, Hailemariam Desalegn also noted the promotion is a result of the successful reform and capacity building activities inside the army.
The appointees were decorated for their great achievements in execution of their duties, managerial capacities, skills and disciplines.

Ethiopia and Sudan have also agreed to form a committee that would receive courses by specialists in the fields of combating epidemics and diseases in the wake of the Ebola virus threat.
The rapidly transmitting chronic disease which is sweeping West African countries has killed over 3,300 people.
