East Africa boosts anti-Ebola measures

NAIROBI, July 31, 2014 (AFP) - Kenya and Ethiopia, home to some of Africa's largest transport hubs, said Thursday they had boosted measures to combat possible Ebola cases arriving in their countries. Kenya's National Disaster Operation Centre said in a statement that "port health services are on standby, with enhanced screening at border points to prevent and contain any possible disease threat". Meanwhile Ethiopia Airlines said it was taking "extraordinary precautions in connection with the outbreak of the disease". Ethiopia's national carrier is a major airline connecting countries across Africa, as well as flying to the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.    "Stringent and specific surveillance is being carried out regarding all flights from west Africa at Addis Ababa airport," the airline said in a statement. Fears that the outbreak of the virus in west Africa could spread have grown in recent days. Almost 700 people have been kill

Ethiopia: New Housing Scheme for Diaspora and Diplomatic Mission Workers

A draft directive is prepared by the Ministry of Development, Housing and Construction (MUDHC) on housing registration for members of the Ethiopian Diaspora community. This housing scheme is going to be open only for the Ethiopian Diaspora. The directive stipulates different list of prices and different housing schemes from which they can own a house from 40/60 and 20/80 schemes, which currently are underway. According to the draft document, beneficiaries of the directive are the Diaspora and workers of the Ethiopian diplomatic missions. Members of these groups can register individually or can organize themselves and register under housing cooperative associations. Individuals who would like to be included under this scheme have different alternatives. They can register for houses from two to four bedroom houses. According to Fortune, the directive rules out the alternative of a one bedroom apartment. A two bedroom apartment is going to lie on 74 square meters and built on a

by Harry C. Alford The idea hit me during the International Panel at our 22 nd  annual conference in Chicago July 10-12. Speaking on the panel were NBCC members from Colombia, Benin, Ghana, Suriname, Ethiopia and France. Ghana, France and Suriname have participated at previous conferences. It was Colombia’s first and they were given an NBCC board seat, taken by Juan Camilo Cabezas, for their effort in forming a strong and viable chapter headquartered in Cali, Colombia, a city of 2.5 million people – and 70 percent Black! As impressive as this map is, an argument can be made that there are more countries with over 100,000 people of African descent, such as Papua, New Guinea, Australia and, as Harry Alford points out, even China. – Map: CompareAfrique.com The Ethiopia participation comes by way of the Pan African Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This association of 35 African countries was recently formed and is headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We look forward to a pr

Ethiopia needs to do better

That's the message for Ethiopia Copyright 2014: Houston Chronicle July 28, 2014  |  Updated: July 28, 2014 10:25pm As they ready for two days of wheeling and dealing with a high-ranking Ethiopian delegation at a local hotel, Houston business and elected leaders today need to look beyond a foreign market opportunity and first ask hard questions about Ethiopia's recent crackdown on nine journalists, as well as the country's unsuccessful move this spring to make homosexuality a "non-pardonable" crime. Ethiopia is the second largest jailer of journalists in Africa, behind its neighbor on the Horn, Eritrea. This month it upped the tally by formally indicting nine editors, freelancers and bloggers with trumped up charges of inciting violence and terrorism. The world's preeminent advocacy organization for journalists and press freedom, the Committee to Protect Journalists, called the government's action a move to "suppress political dissent an

Ethiopia should consider currency devaluation: World Bank

Ethiopia should consider devaluing its currency to boost exports as they are mostly unprocessed products and need to stay competitive on price, a World Bank economist said on Tuesday. Ethiopia, whose main exports are coffee, horticultural products, oilseeds and livestock, has operated a carefully managed floating exchange rate regime since 1992. The last big devaluation was in 2010 when the birr lost 16.7 percent of its value to the dollar. The central bank quoted the birr at 19.6511/19.8476 to the US currency on Tuesday. "By one measure of real exchange rate, Ethiopia's currency is 31 percent overvalued," the World Bank's lead economist in Ethiopia, Lars Christian Moller, said in Addis Ababa. At an event to launch an economic report on the Horn of Africa nation, he said devaluing the currency by 10 percent could increase export growth by 5 percentage points a year. "Ethiopia's exports are relatively unsophisticated, unprocessed and tend to compete in pri

"Anyone who is seen and acting within this terrorist network will be eligible for the course of law," he told reporters. World Bank ‘wrong’ on Ethiopia’s ranking on ease of doing business - Desalegn - CNBC Africa

Ethiopia continues to record impressive economic growth and is estimated to be one of the first growing economies in Africa. Ethiopia - Gross domestic product 48.15 (US dollars, billions) in 2013 GDP at purchaser's prices is the sum of gross value added by all resident producers in the economy plus any product taxes and minus any subsidies not included in the value of the products. It is calculated without making deductions for depreciation of fabricated assets or for depletion and degradation of natural resources. Data are in current U.S. dollars. Dollar figures for GDP are converted from domestic currencies using single year official exchange rates. World Bank ‘wrong’ on Ethiopia’s ranking on ease of doing business - Desalegn - CNBC Africa

Ethiopia: How Coffee Farmers Sponsor Government Projects

Nairobi — Ethiopia, a poor East African country with record of abject poverty, is now one of the fastest growing economies in that region. This achievement followed an effective value chain developed by the country's coffee farmers under the aegis of Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU) that does not only improved the earnings of the Ethiopian farmers but also empowered the OCFCU to sponsor some government projects. Delivering a paper at the recently concluded conference on Finance for Revolutionising agricultural value chain in Nairobi, Kenya, co-sponsored by the African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA) and the Technical Center for Agricultural and Rural Cooperative (CTA), Mr. Dessalegn Jena of OCFCU said his union provides social services as part of its contribution to the government and people of Ethiopia. He said the union has built 81 schools and related facilities and transferred to the government, constructed 20 clinics, provided 89 sources
