Ford Motor Company, already present in Port Elizabeth and Pretoria, South Africa is keen to bring some 25 new products between now and 2016 across the Middle East and Africa.
According to Jeffery Nemeth, president and chief of the Sub-Saharan Africa region Ford will sell new products out of which 17 will specifically be destined for the Sub-Saharan region.  In his roundtable with the reporters, Nemeth said that Ford currently faces difficulties in bringing highly sophisticated and fuel-efficient vehicles. He said he was in town to discuss fuel quality with government officials so that Ford’s brand new models could be on the road.
“We can’t bring our highest technology engines because of fuel quality. But we are confident that the government will get there and the refineries will also get there. At this point we are discussing with the government what plans they have; with little sulfur and high quality fuels, which will allow us to bring in the most efficient, most sophisticated engines to the country,” Nemeth said. The new Ranger model car has 2.2 and 3.2 liter diesel engines, which makes it more fuel efficient and most performing, the president noted.
The 34 billion dollar amassing Ford Company, according to Nemeth, holds ten percent markets share in Ethiopia. Ford shares markets of 13 percent in South Africa, 15 percent in the US, nine percent in Europe and four percent in China. With such markets perspectives, Nemeth said that Ethiopia’s share happens to be over the global market average, making it promising. Yet, he declined to disclose the monetary side of the business Ford enjoys in Ethiopia.
When asked whether Ford would consider Ethiopia for assembly plants, he regretted saying that currently they have no plans to invest anywhere in Africa except expanding what the giant car maker has had in South Africa since 1923.
According to Nemeth, between now and 2020, the car sales Ford projected will reach to 5.5 million units, dominating the market with a 40 percent stake. Currently, Ford supplies to some 67 markets in the Middle East and Africa, annually making some 200 thousand units being available to the regions.
Ries Engineering SC, the local dealer that sells Ford and Caterpillar products, Massey Ferguson (agricultural equipment manufacturer) and PERKINS (which makes diesel engines) told The Reporter that it has been investing in three new facilities with some 150 million birr. According to the officials, the company has finalized setting up facilities in Hawassa, Bahir Dar and Dire Dawa. It also has rented a building in Addis to kick start a quick lane service in relation to the Ford-made vehicles maintenances. However, 80 percent of the dealership business slants to Caterpillar, which makes heavy-duty construction machineries and equipment. Ries Engineering has been in the business for some 49 years in Ethiopia.
