The wholesale stores are planned across 27 cities, with Hawassa and Shashemene chosen as early destinations
The second Alle Bejimla wholesale cash & carry store opened at Kaliti on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, with the third, at Merkato, to follow on July 2, 2014. The cost to the government of setting up the three stores has reached 26 million Br.
A profit making state venture under the Ethiopian Trading Enterprise (ETE), with the trade name Alle Bejimla, which literally translates as “wholesale available” commenced operations on May 26, 2014, this year, when Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn inaugurated the opening of its Megenagna store.
The Kaliti store will target residents of the Akaki Kaliti and Nefas Silk Lafto districts.
The Merkato store is anticipated to be opened in front of the Khelifa Building in Somali Tera in Addis Ketema District. All three stores are using facilities owned by the Merchandise Wholesale & Import Trade Enterprise (MEWITE).
The ETE has set out to set up 36 wholesale stores in 27 cities, with a demographic figure of more than 100,000, Nuredin Mohammud, acting general manager of Alle said. There is, however, a plan to open more stores in Shashemene and Hawassa in the near future, he added. These cities were chosen as Alle’s early destinations for their viable trade mobilisation and national diversification, according to Nuredin.
The Enterprise, a profit making business establishment, is responsible to the Ministry of Trade (MoT). It works hand in hand with the private sector to curb unfair competition and foster a modern trading system, maintaining relatively reasonable prices and thereby lowering inflation, he says.
Alle offers locally and internationally sourced products, with 60pc of the goods in store purchased from local producers and manufacturers.
Customers are to comply with the terms and conditions laid down by Alle to have transactions with it. There are about 13 terms and conditions, which serve as a prerequisite to conducting business with Alle Bejimila. These include TIN number, verified commercial address and willingness to distribute commodities at prices set by Alle. Alle has deployed 175 workers at the two stores now open.
